  1. What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep Apnea happens when a person’s upper airway is partially or completely blocked while they are asleep. The person’s breathing will periodically stop during an apnea event which triggers your brain to wake up briefly, just enough for you to take a breath. Then you will fall back into sleep until your next apnea event starts this cycle again. Most of the time, the person is unaware of the events happening but will report waking up feeling tired.

The Main types of Sleep Apnea are:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) - most common type of sleep apnea where there is full or partial (Hypopnea) upper airway blockage resulting in obstruction of airflow.
  •  Central sleep apnea – more uncommon type of sleep apnea where the airway is open, but no airflow due to lack of communication between brain and body to initiate a breath.
  •   Complex sleep apnea syndrome – a mixture of obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea.
  1. What are the common symptoms of Sleep Apnea?

The most common symptom of Sleep Apnea is loud snoring that usually is observed by your partner or family. Some of the other symptoms are:

  •   Gasping or choking sounds while sleeping
  •   Pauses in breathing while sleeping
  •   Tossing and Turning
  •   Waking up gasping or choking
  •   Tiredness and feeling unrefreshed after sleep
  •   Poor concentration
  •   Morning headaches
  •   Depressed mood
  •   Night sweats
  •   Weight gain
  •   Forgetfulness
  •   Sexual dysfunction
  •   Frequent urination at night
  1. What are the common effects of Sleep Apnea?

When you have Sleep Apnea, whether it is mild, moderate or severe, there will be effects on your body from having this disturbed sleep cycle. Some of the common noticeable effects are:

  •  Daytime sleepiness
  •    Tiredness
  •   Loss of memory
  •   Headaches
  •  Moodiness/Irritability
  •    Increased chances of motor vehicle or workplace accidents
  1. Why do I need to treat Sleep Apnea?

Most people are aware that healthy diets and exercise are important in keeping good health. However, the quality of sleep is probably one of the most important factors that often gets overlooked.

If left untreated, it can contribute to other more serious long-term health risks such as:

  •    Heart disease
  •    Diabetes
  •    High blood pressure
  •    Weakened immune system
  •    Decreased sexual desire and possible impotence in men
  •    High LDL cholesterol levels
  •    High blood sugar
  1. Can I buy a machine without a Sleep Study?

It is not entirely necessary to complete a sleep study prior to purchasing a CPAP machine as long as you are purchasing an Automatic machine that can adjust to your pressure needs. However, we do strongly recommend for individuals to undertake a sleep study as it would provide a much more details understanding of your sleep patterns and any other underlying concerns.

  1. What are the types of CPAP machines?

There are 3 main types of Sleep Apnea machines (more commonly referred to as CPAP machines):

  • CPAP – This refers to a Fixed Pressure Sleep Apnea machine that delivers a single constant airflow throughout the night to assist with treating obstruction events. The treatment pressure is usually pre-determined through a pressure titration test ordered by a sleep specialist.
  • APAP – This refers to an Automatic Pressure Sleep Apnea machine that will automatically vary the air pressure delivery throughout the night in response to the person’s needs. It will only increase the pressure during the onset of an obstruction event and hence can make your treatment more comfortable.
  • BiPAP – This refers to a Bi-level Pressure Sleep Apnea machine that delivers two alternating levels of pressurized air. The Inspiratory Positive Airway Pressure (IPAP) is higher to support a breath during inhalation. The Expiratory Positive Airway Pressure (EPAP) is a lower pressure that allows you to exhale comfortably whilst keeping your airways open. These are more advanced machines used by people suffering from more severe respiratory problems and can only be obtained via a prescription from a specialist.
  1. CPAP Machine or Auto Machine, which type is best for me?
  • CPAP Machines are the cheapest option. BMC CPAP provides a constant amount of pressure to keep the upper airway open during sleep. The amount of pressure needs to be determined by a recently sleep study, followed up by a doctors’ prescription which will state the “treatment pressure”.
  • APAP (Auto) Machines are (in my opinion) the best option. BMC Auto CPAP is a stylish and quiet therapy system for the treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). The Automatic Positive Airway Pressure (APAP) helps prevent the collapse of upper airways during sleep and stops snoring.
  1. Do masks make a noise?

Yes. All masks have an exhaust vent. The sound level from this vent varies.

Sometimes the expelled air from this vent reflects from pillows and bed covers which increases the sound level. Repositioning the bedding can be a quick fix for this. Sometimes mask leaks can also contribute to increased sound levels. Mask leaks can occur for many reasons, including;

  •    Headgear straps not tight enough
  •    Headgear straps worn out
  •    Forehead support needs adjusting
  •   Mask too old (silicon ageing)
  •    Incorrect size (usually too big)
  •   Pillow pushing mask away from face
  •   Facial hair interfering with seal
  •   Mask style not compatible
  1. Can I change my pressure settings?

Yes, it is your machine and it is possible. Some experienced CPAP / APAP users like to manage their own healthcare, and there can be benefits in doing so.

However, you first need to understand and learn about the associated risks and benefits. Before making any changes, we strongly advise you to discuss the reasons why you may wish to change the pressure settings on your machine with your healthcare professional.

15.Can I use my CPAP machine Overseas or on a Cruise Ship?

Yes. All BMC Machines we sell can operate between 100VAC and 240VAC with 50/60Hz - so basically on AC power anywhere in the world, including cruise ships. This means it will work on any mains supply voltage anywhere in the world.

    16. Why do I sometimes get water in my mask or tubing?

Make sure do not overfill the water tank. Around 1/3 to 3/4 is usually best.

Turn down the humidifier setting. Try 2, 1.

    17. How to reduce tubing moisture?

Winter can be a challenging time for CPAP users, if the air is too cold, when you breathe out, the warm air from your body will meet the cold air coming in from the room. This may cause condensation to form and may accumulate inside the mask and in the hose. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as ‘CPAP rainout’. If you are using a humidifier, this adds moisture to the air you breathe and can contribute to rainout effect in the colder months.

Here are some suggestions to help you get used to your winter CPAP therapy. Try;

  •    closing the windows at night
  •    warming the room, especially near where the CPAP machine is drawing in the air
  •    placing the CPAP tubing under the bedclothes (body heat and blanket insulation warm the air flowing through it)
  •   always have the CPAP machine/humidifier lower than the bed
  •    changing the position of the tubing so that any moisture can drain down and back into the humidifier

Another option is a heated tubing which is designed to eliminate any moisture build up in the tubing.

18.Why do I have a dry mouth in the morning?

With CPAP therapy, you should breathe in and out through your nose only. Despite best efforts to do this, sometimes;

  •   Wake up with a dry mouth
  •   Mouth leaks occur due to high CPAP pressures
  •   Swallowing air makes you feel bloated

These are symptoms that your mouth may have been open during sleep.

Try use full face mask replace nasal mask, and reduce the treat pressure.
